Pleased to meet you, I am Kazuhiro Shimata!

I work at the Tokyo sales office of TANAKA FOODS Co., Ltd which is headquartered in Hiroshima Prefecture.
You probably have never heard of us TANAKA FOODS, have you?
But the company itself was established in 1901(Meiji era) and is time-honored. (Yes, for 114 years!)

And the products that my dear TANAKA FOODS produces are “Furikake”.
With this project, I would like to deliver to the people across the world the charms of this “Miracle food: Furikake” which it is not too much to say that had supported postwar recovery of Japan,

What is Furikake?

“Furikake” is the subsidiary food to mainly add flavor to steamed rice to make it more delicious and easier to eat. It is the magic flakes which has been loved by Japanese people since old times as rice is the staple food in Japan.
Its name comes from the Japanese word “Furikakeru(which means sprinkle)” over rice.
In old days in Japan, unlike recent years which is called "satiation period", Furikake seemed to be a common people-friendly food which easily turns ordinary rice delicious.
Today, variety of Furikake such as “Wasabi flavored,〇〇 flavored”are available throughout Japan, and have been loved by young and old. It is an absolute “comfort food of Japanese people”.

Touching story of the Furikake produced out of parental love.

Such Furikake, we first started producing them in 1916 and have a long seller which has been very popular to this date. That’s “Kozakana-Furikake / Ryoko No Tomo”.

“Ryoko No Tomo” was invented by the request of the Japanese army while it was known as “nutraceutical food” in early Taisho period. As the background of its development, there were parental love which “to want to feed their children who go to the expedition destination a delicious and a highly nutritious food”.
(The name “Ryoko No Tomo” means “A friend(Tomo) for a trip(Ryoko)” which comes from “To give it to the people go on a war trip")

Later on, we started to try different blending variations of Soy sauce, adjusting the amount of salt added in summer as people sweat more, and etc., we kept taking a process of trial and error. And based on these two most important concepts “to never compromise on ingredients” and “to create deliciousness”, and with our constant efforts, Ryoko No Tomo finally established its position as “The essential” on the able in Japan today.

What are the ingredients of the Japanese people’s favorite “Ryoko No Tomo”?

The ingredients of “Ryoko No Tomo” are “small fish powder” which is rich in Calcium and is the base ingredient, “Sesame seeds” which have an anti-aging effect, “seaweed” which is rich in minerals, “egg” that is rich in essential amino acids, and other ingredients. We form them into granules in our own technology and blend them together.
You probably can tell by its ingredients that it was invented as “nutraceutical food”.

Our recommended way of eating.

Now, let me introduce our recommended way of eating as most of you probably have no clue how to eat it due to the fact Furikake is not very familiar to non-Japanese people.

The most recommended way is to sprinkle a lot of Furikake over freshly cooked rice, it’s definitely the best way!

But of course, you can also enjoy it with cold rice and it is very popular for Bento in Japan.
(I wonder if it goes well with “long grain rice: Indica rice” which is mainly grown in Southeast Asian countries, too…? )

I also recommend sprinkling it over boiled pasta tossed with olive oil. It is delicious, and in minutes your Japanese style pasta is ready. (Japanese style pastas such as the ones tossed with “Salted cod roe”, “Soy sauce” and etc. are very popular in Japan and there are many restaurants serve them)

My family enjoys using it as a seasoning for French fries, as a substitution for bread crumbs to cook fried fish, and sprinkles it over a hamburger patty. It is also very useful as seasoning/condiments as it adds Japanese taste to your dishes!
